FIRST ISSUE

   

By the Regulations for Currency, stipulated under the Royal Decree No. (6), dated (1/71379 H.), the First Issue of Saudi banknotes was put in circulation on (1/1/1381H.) corresponding to (14/6/1961G), during the Reign of King Saud Bin Abdulaziz. This 1st Issue included the One Hundred, the Fifty, the Ten, the Five and the One Saudi Riyal denominations. This issue was withdrawn from circulation on (1/5/1391H.) corresponding to (24/6/1971G.).

   

 

One Hundred Riyals Note: First Issue, circulated during the reign of King Saud.

Obverse: A rectangle showing the gate of al-Nasiriya Palace in the middle, and Cabinet Office Building, to the left. On the right side appears a view representing the Royal Technical Institute, the water mark and the security thread. At the top appears the name of SAMA and the number and date of the Royal Decree by virtue of which the note was issued. On the left side appears the Authority's undertaking to pay the value of the note, and in the middle and the four comers the value of the note are given. in numbers. At the bottom of the note the value is given in words. On this side of the note, we see the serial number and the signatures of the Minister of Finance and the Governor.

Reverse: Divided into three parts: the middle, with the Kingdom's emblem inside a pointed arch and the name of the King, and the right and left, which contain two minarets of the Madina Holy Mosque, as well as the value of the note and the name of SAMA in English

Fifty Riyals Note: First Issue, circulated during the reign of King Saud.

Obverse: A rectangle with a view of a refinery at the centre. On the right and left sides there are two horseshoe shaped arches. On the right side, appear the water mark and the security thread. In the top frame is the name of SAMA. The number and date of the Royal Decree by virtue of which the note was issued and serial number are at the top of the rectangle. Below that is the value of the note in numbers and the undertaking by SAMA, signed by the Governor. At the bottom, on the right side, we see the signature of the Minister of Finance and the serial number too. In the lower frame, there is the value of the note in both words and numbers.

Reverse : A rectangle, with an arch in the middle. Inside the arch appears the Kingdom's emblem, with the name of the King Saud in whose reign the note was issued, the value of the note and the name of SAMA. On each side of the note we see the picture of a minaret.

Ten Riyals Note: First Issue, circulated during the reign of King Saud.

Obverse: A rectangle at the centre of which appears a view of Jeddah Port and two dhows. To the left appears the commitment by SAMA. At the top appears the name of the Monetary Authority and the number and date of the Royal Decree by virtue of which the note was issued. To the right appears a circle, inside which there is the water mark. The  serial number, signatures of the Minister of Finance and the Governor, the security thread and the value of the note are also shown here.

Reverse: In the middle is the Kingdom's emblem inside an arch, with the name of King Saud under it. On the   right  side of the note is the value in English. In the top frame of the rectangle appears the name of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority in English.

Five Riyals Note: The first Issue made during the reign of King Saud.

Obverse: The design includes a view of the al- Masmak Palace, the water mark and the security thread. On the left appears the undertaking to pay the value of the note, the name of SAMA, the number and date of the Decree by virtue of which the note was issued, the value in Arabic words and numbers,   the serial number and the signatures of the Minister of Finance and the Governor.

Reverse: A rectangle contains the Kingdom's emblem in the middle and the name of His Majesty, King Saud under it. At the top appears the name of SAMA in English. It contains also the value of the note in English words and (western) Arabic numbers.

Paper Currency , One Riyal Denomination: First Issue, printed during the reign of King Saud.

Obverse: Contains a view al-Nur Mountain (in Mecca), the security thread and the water mark. To the left appears the commitment by SAMA to pay the bearer the value of one riyal. At the top appears the name of the "Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority" and the number and date of the Decree by virtue of which the note was issued. At the bottom appear the serial number, the signatures of the Minister of Finance and the Governor, and the value of the note. In the comers, the value of the note in (Eastern) Arabic numerals.

Reverse: In the middle appears an Islamic ornament and the Kingdom's emblem with the name of His Majesty, King Saud under that. At the top appears the name of SAMA in English. The value of the note in English words and numbers is also given
