​​​​​​​​Overview

​The sixth issue of the Saudi currency, in its different coin and banknote denominations, was released in the era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, under the slogan “Confidence and Security.” This issue has been designed in line with the most advanced technologies and standards globally, and the best technical and security specifications that accommodate the standing of the Saudi currency and SAMA, and boost confidence in the robustness and soundness of the Saudi riyal.

On 27/03/1438H, corresponding to 26/12/2016, the following banknote denominations were issued: 500 riyals, 100 riyals, 50 riyals, ten riyals, and five riyals. As for coins, the following denominations were minted: two riyals, one riyal, 50 halalas, 25 halalas, 10 halalas, five halalas, and one halala.

On 11/02/1442H, corresponding to 28/09/2020, the five riyals polymer banknote was issued with a design and colors similar to the circulating cotton-based banknotes, taking into account the different manufacturing techniques and technical specifications, and the security features for this banknote. Shortly thereafter, the 200 riyals banknote was issued on 04/01/2021, as a major banknote of the sixth issue in commemoration of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

  • Obverse:
  • The center features the picture of the Holy Kaaba. On top of that, the name of the Saudi Central Bank and the number and date of the Royal Decree pursuant to which it was issued are shown in Arabic. On the right side of the banknote, a portrait of King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud and the serial number appear. Under the picture, the value of the banknote is in Arabic. On the left side of the banknote, the watermark and foil strip appear, bearing the emblem of Saudi Arabia and the value of the banknote. At the bottom of the banknote, the signatures of the Minister of Finance and the Governor of SAMA are shown. ​

Two Riyals Coin

  • Obverse:
  • A portrait of King Abdulaziz Al Saud is engraved in gold in the center. On the right side of the portrait, the King’s name (King Abdulaziz bin Abdul-Rahman Al Saud) is engraved in a silver frame, and a semi-decorative frame to the left, composed of plant motifs interwoven with the repeated emblem of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Reverse:
  • The number of the coin denomination (SAR 2) is written in gold color in the center with the denomination in Arabic letters (ريالان) placed above, while the denomination in English (TWO RIYALS) is placed at the bottom. On the right side of the coin, there is a silver frame containing the name of Saudi Arabia, and on the left, there is a semi-decorative frame featuring repeated plant motifs and the emblem. The Hijri year is engraved at the top, and the Gregorian year is engraved at the bottom.

One Riyal Coin

  • Obverse:
  • In the center, there is a portrait of King Salman Al Saud in silver. On the right side, the name and title of the King (Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud) are engraved in a golden frame, and on the left, there is a semi-decorative frame composed of plant motifs interwoven with the repeated emblem of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Reverse:
  • In the center, the coin denomination (SAR 1) is written as a numeral in silver with the denomination in Arabic letters (ريال واحد) on the top and in English (ONE RIYAL) at the bottom. On the right side, there is a golden frame engraved with Saudi Arabia’s full name, and on the left, there is a semi-decorative frame composed of plant motifs interwoven with the repeated emblem of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Hijri year is engraved at the top, and the Gregorian year is engraved at the bottom.

  • Saudi Arabia’s national emblem is engraved in the center with the King’s title (the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques) and a recurrent plant motif atop. The King’s name (Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud) is engraved at the bottom of the emblem with the Hijri year on the right side and the Gregorian year on the left. The top and bottom of the obverse side are engraved with recurrent plant motifs.
  • Reverse:
  • The number (50) is engraved in the center, with the denomination in Arabic words (خمسون هللة) placed above and the denomination in English (FIFTY HALALAS) at the bottom. In addition, the top and the bottom areas of the reverse side are engraved with recurrent plant motifs.
